Rongai Route Other things to do

A trip to East Africa wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Tanzania’s other world-class attractions, the Northern Circuit Safari Parks of Serengeti and Ngorogoro. Both parks are within driving distance from Arusha.

The endless plains of the Serengeti National Park cover 14,000 sq kms and support about 3 million animals, the greatest concentration of plains animals in Africa. You will see wildebeest, elephant, hippo, giraffe, zebra, Thompson gazelle, topi, hartebeest and eland as well as all the top predators lion, cheetah, hyena, jackal and the occasional leopard.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area  encompasses 8,000 sq kms, is an ancient volcanic crater which is densely populated with plains animals. Sensational, mountainous scenery and heavy concentrations of game make the Ngorongoro a stunning destination.

The 10 mile wide crater rim stands about 2,000ft above sea level. It is home to 30,000 mammals, including rhino, zebra, elephant, wildebeest, lion, cheetah, and hyena.

It’s difficult to arrange an affordable camping safari in Tanzania. Trips tend to be expensive hotel-based affairs aimed at the luxury end of the market (a bit like Tenerife with elephants). Great if you want to sit by the pool all day and pay through-the-nose for dodgy cocktails, but if you want to experience the beating heart of wild Africa you’d be better off opting for a camping safari.

If you fancy spotting the Big 5 by day and relaxing with a beer underneath the star filled African sky by night, you might want to give this a try.

We provide comfortable Safari tents (big enough to stand-up in), a 4 x 4 safari vehicle, driver/ game expert and a cook.  The food is of a high standard too, and there’s usually room in the back of the Landrover for a slab of beer and a few bottles of vino. This is all about relaxing after the climb in the stunning surroundings of the African bush.........and trying not to get devoured by lions!
